Description
1. The problem of mental causation A central issue in the philosophy of mind is the problem of mental causation. Everyday explanatory practice demonstrates how we commonly assume that mental causation is possible. When my friends ask me why I am running to the basement, I might answer that I thought it was an ideal evening to enjoy a glass of wine and therefore decided to go and get a bottle. I then explain the physical movement of my legs by referring to a previous thought and suggest that my thought caused my running. When my mother asks me why I am nervous, I could answer that I just came to realise how much work I have and how little I have done until now, and that this made me think that I had been too lazy and hence made me a bit angry with myself. I then explain my current comportment by referring to how one of my beliefs caused another.
